Day 15 To Joffre Lakes Park

To Joffre Lakes today hoping for a view like this.

We'd pre booked day passes for the park last night having realised that they were necessary before visiting. Set off in a north easterly direction along The Sea to Sky Highway for a drive of about 1 hour, in cloud and drizzle, hoping for a break in the weather at some point!

The journey took a little longer as there were road works and then a logging lorry to follow up some seriously steep hills

There are a series of three lakes to visit, each one more spectacular than the last (in good weather.) The waters should be a beautiful blue/green colour but not quite so in the rain and cloud.

The first lake was a 5 minute walk from the car park

and was quite atmospheric with the weather conditions. We were well kitted out and prepared for the full walk, unlike some who tried walking in sandals, with umbrellas, and in some interesting ponchos.

The walk to the second lake was the most tricky

paths became more of a scramble

with some steep steps.

However the rain had eased which was good.

The second lake was covered in cloud when we arrived

but with every passing second the cloud changed and we were treated to some lovely views

We then carried on to the third lake. By now the rain had set in and it wasn't the most pleasant of walks. Muddy water began to accumulate and the rocks became more slippery. Maybe we should have brought the walking poles that were in the boot of the car!

There was a spectacular waterfall on the way

A stunning viewpoint (apparently!)

Managed to see the lake and the glacier though.

We stood around under a tree chatting with a group from Tasmania whilst eating a sandwich in the hope that the weather would brighten but the rain showed no sign of stopping and we were getting chilly standing still. So we headed back to the car park. Camera and phone packed away to stop them getting even wetter.
The rain eased as we approached lake one and the view was very different to earlier

Our walk of 7.5 miles took around 4 hours and was well worth it despite the rain.

Finished our picnic sat in the car, steaming nicely as we tried to warm up.

We visited Nairn Waterfall  as we were passing it on our way back. The rain had stopped and there were even glimpses of sunshine. Another spectacular sight

Back at our apartment we have all our gear spread around to dry out. Hopefully the weather will be kinder tomorrow as we are planning to go up the gondola here in Whistler. Fingers crossed!
