Day 5 Exploring Banff

This morning we woke at 7.30 am, a much more sensible time! After breakfast we walked to the car hire office in the main part of town and collected our "medium size" car.

We called in to the supermarket and stocked up with provisions for the next 4 days. everything in Canada is super sized, not just the cars. Apples, strawberries, kebabs, rolls, cost of food, you name it, it's larger! It's not possible to buy alcohol in supermarkets so we'll  definitely need to find a liquor shop later on!

After unpacking the shopping and making ourselves a "supersized" picnic lunch we drove up to the Banff Gondola but were turned away as we hadn't pre booked tickets and the car park was full.

Headed back in to town and walked along the Bow River towards the Bow Falls. Amazing photo opportunities everywhere you look. (Unless someone gets in your shot!)

Many of the older buildings have a distinctly Scottish feel about them. Probably because Banff was named in 1884 by George Stephen, president of the Canadian Pacific Railway who was born in Banff, Scotland.

We then walked along the main street, which is pedestrianised and has a mountain at each end.

Stopped at a bar for a drink, it's quite humid here, the strong sunshine was interspersed with cloud and a nice breeze. We found a liquor shop, it was tiny unlike everything else. Bought an expensive bottle of wine for our evening meal, let's hope it tastes good!

We wandered along the opposite bank of the river towards "Surprise Corner", nothing special or very surprising there. On our way back to the car we could hear music coming from the bandstand and stopped for a while to listen to a school band. They were all talented violinists.

We cooked a lovely dinner but unfortunately the wine wasn't that great. After dinner we went for a stroll downtown where there are lots of bars, restaurants and at least 3 liquor stores (they looked far better than the one we visited earlier.) Bought a couple of bottles of wine and some beers for future research. The whole area was fairly busy with tourists and had a nice buzz about it.
Whilst walking back we saw a fawn in someone's back garden which was lovely. Didn't managed to get its photo though.
