Day 1 Off to Borneo

This morning we were woken by the alarm at 5.15 a.m to make sure that we were ready for our taxi pick up an hour later. We had a smooth journey, a stress free check in and were sat down to second breakfast by 8.15a.m.

Our good fortune wasn't to last as we had to spend 90 minutes sat on the runway waiting for a slot to leave Heathrow! Air Malaysia food was pretty good, spicy but not too hot. It took a further 12.5 hours to reach Kuala Lumpur. Our 5 hour wait there was made much more bearable by some comfy seats in Starbucks, a chat with an American couple heading back to Arizona and a small piece of our leftover homemade cake.

Our second flight to Kuching left pretty much on time and took just under 2 hours, easy! We watched our luggage being loaded so it was great to know that it was going to arrive at the same time as us. Not always the case, apparently.

We went for a short walk around the locality
and to buy some water and coke, meeting up with the rest of our group of 12 on the roof terrace of the hotel for drinks and a welcome meeting.

Then out of dinner at a local food market, with 20 or so stalls serving anything from fresh fish to satay beef (which we went for) accompanied by a very large, very cold tiger beer. each. Delicious.

Then back to the air conditioned hotel for an early night after our very long first day.
