Day 3 Fly to Mulu National Park

This morning we headed back to the airport for a domestic flight to Mulu. On a propeller plane that took around 60 passengers.

We whizzed through baggage scanning and check in. Our flight took off and I thoroughly enjoyed the views during our 90 minute flight. During which they managed to serve a very decent sandwich and some drinks.

The surrounding area at Mulu airport was mountainous and dense jungle. The heat and humidity hit you as you disembarked, as did the beauty of the scenery.

Baggage collection was a dream, our suitcases were first off too!

Landing to leaving on our truck took around 10 minutes. Neil and I went in the first group, along with the luggage (our guide sat on top!)

The rest of the group arrived in style….we have booked a turn for our return trip to the airport!

We have a lovely bungalow to stay in for the next two nights. Very reminiscent of Costa Rica.

After a delicious lunch at the site restaurant we had a guided afternoon walk through the forest on a boardwalk, heading to Lang’s Cave and Deer Cave, seeing many animals, insects and flowers on the way. Most good photos still on Neil's camera though!

The caves were spectacular.

After exiting Deer Cave we sat and watched the bats leaving their roost. A spectacle that went on for about 30 minutes

We returned back to base just after dark. Had a speedy dinner and began a night walk. Saw some really interesting insects and animals.

Rain set in so we had to abandon the walk. This has now turned into a thunderstorm which we are enjoying listening to from inside our bungalow. The insects and mammals have been silenced by the rain for now.
