Day 12 Travel to Danum Valley

We set off after breakfast, our last boat ride across the Kinabatangan River. Heading for the primary rainforest in the Danum Valley.

Boarded one of the two mini buses and drove for a couple of hours past the endless palm oil plantations. The fruit is harvested with a long scythe.

Past several villages

We arrived at our transport change over point in Lahad Datu to be taken into a very swish “lounge”

Where we were given snacks, tea, coffee and had the use of some very swish toilets. Just noticed that petrol here is 2 ringits (35p) a litre.

The 4x4 was equally swish. We began the 2 hour journey on dual carriageway with palm oil plantations flanking the road.

The roads become narrower and gravelled as we got nearer. The last 20 km or so we were in primary rainforest. The roads extra  bumpy. Crossed a couple of rivers.

Borneo Rainforest Lodge is a wonderful place! I think that we're going to have a great time here.

Lunch was amazing, actual salad! Had some pasta too, funnily enough no-one went for rice or noodles! After lunch we were shown to our beautiful room.

Had an hour to rest then went to join the group for a jungle walk. Saw some red leaf monkeys

Wild banana, eaten by pigmy elephants

A mast, which is still waiting for 5G to arrive.

Unfortunately one of our group slipped in the mud and may have broken her wrist. We all walked back and a buggy picked her up along with a couple of guides.

It had started raining by this point to we walked to “happy hour” with canapes. Soaked but never mind!

After a lovely dinner we went on a night drive in electric buggies. We saw Wallace's flying frog

Sumatran pit viper, which will kill you in 45 mins if it bites you!
